We found a prairie dog town in Lubbock

Know who else besides prairie dogs live in prairie dog towns?

Burrowing owls.

It’s a symbiotic relationship.  The little owls don’t eat prairie dogs, they eat large insects and small mammals.

The owls use the prairie dog burrows for nesting.  The prairie dogs benefit from the vigilance of the owls.

Remember three days ago?

We spent the night right outside of Kerrville.  We walked along the Guadalupe River.  It’s one of the most charming scenic places a person can be.

Last night, that area of Texas got an entire summer’s worth of rain in one day.  Our friends who live there are not in a low-lying area.  It’s not even flat, it’s in Hill Country.  We’ve talked to them today.  They went to bed last night at midnight with a little sprinkling of rain.  At 5am they were rescued by boat.  The water had receded enough they were back in their house today, but with more rain coming they could be evacuated again with no notice.  Along one section of the Guadalupe River, the water rose by half a foot every minute for an hour.  How does anybody prepare for 30 feet of water?  There are resorts and campgrounds all along the river.  It’s not good.  They’re still collecting people and counting.  It just came out of nowhere in the dark.

Becky’s House

Just in time to avoid the crowds of Fourth of July long-weekend campers!  Being here with Becky and Brian and not on the highway is a good place to be.

2025 Colorado Trip

We’ll hang here for awhile enjoying their hospitality and two new kittens, Charlie and Beans.  Jessie is enjoying getting to know them as well, and has been very respectful so far.

Shallowwater

Shallowater, Littlefield, Muleshoe.  Next thing you know, we’re in Clovis, New Mexico.  We worked our way farther north on backroads and byways.  The rolling hills of Eastern New Mexico are lush and green this time of year.  We drove through rain showers all morning; rain showers we could see coming in the distance.  We could tell which ones we were going to drive though and which would miss.  We joined up with I-25 at Springer, with just a hundred miles to go to our destination, Lathrop State Park.
