Knee surgery on Thursday. The wrapping came off Sunday morning. By Sunday lunch she was practicing on the stairs. Sunday evening she forgot she had had knee surgery, got up out of the chair and was surprised. She started physical therapy today. She is way ahead of schedule. We walked a mile together at Anzalduas Park. She’s practicing walking without a limp. She’s a beast.
Billboard
Remember the post I sent out in 2010 about the billboard by the beach? Here is a reprint: I love this billboard near our home; a constant reminder that not everything is as permanent here as we might otherwise think.
We live on a barrier island. Our island paradise intercepts and diffuses hurricanes from the gulf before they get to the mainland. There is nothing naturally occurring here that is over ten or fifteen feet above sea level. The weather takes what we build and makes it impermanent. We build here and live here, recognizing that we’re not really in charge; we’re just using the space for a while. I reported on it again in 2012: My favorite beach billboard.
Still. Now in 2015. The decay continues.
But it’s still there.

Judy graduated
…from the walker to a cane. Her balance is better. Now she’s thump, thump, thumping her way around the house like Captain Ahab. We’ve assigned her an Indian name. Princess Orange Toes.
She’s got a Trump-tan from the antiseptic swabs they used before surgery.
She is doing well enough I could leave her alone for an hour to go take a walk. Got cruised by turkey vultures and an osprey.
I’ve been meaning to show off my culinary prowess, but I keep getting sabotaged by considerate neighbors bringing food. Tonight it was a fresh pot of homemade vegetable beef soup. Thank you Lisette.

Not for dinner. For dinner I cooked up a batch of Judy’s yummy homemade spaghetti (with a little coaching from the recliner chair). The leftovers were last night when her knee was hurting. I gave her one of my kidney stone leftover Oxycodones. She went right to sleep. Good thing I work from home. I got to run and get her stuff all day long. The only thing I can’t do for her is help her not be bored sitting in a recliner chair all day. She has to keep her leg elevated and iced for the first three days. After that she can remove all the bandaging, shower, and start physical therapy. We’ve done this before, this is the fourth scope she’s had done on this knee over the years, so we know PT can be difficult until the range of motion has been restored. In the meantime, in-between bouts of ice and elevation, she’s hobbling around with the walker; making sure she keeps the knee moving even though movement is limited at this point.
