We made it

We’re out of the Salem Dome.  After an 18 day layover, the rig is running fine.  We ran 280 miles to Port Ludlow, got set up, and drove the car another 20 miles to Port Townsend in time to catch the Puffin Tour boat. The Port Ludlow RV Park.  The Redhead. The Grayheads. …and we saw tufted puffins. A good day. 2015 summer trip map

Fifth-wheel trailers

This is what they usually look like.  Leaf spring suspension.  High off the ground. But we saw this one and it looks completely different. It looks like we do with our air suspension emptied when we’re parked.  Low down to the ground.  Too low for ride-height. It’s not possible that it has air suspension is it?  A fifth-wheel trailer wouldn’t have an air compressor on board to pump it back up when it’s time to tow.  Or does it stay like that as a low-rider bumping down the highway when it’s being towed?

This week

We came upon a charming river ferry across the Willamette. It is self-propelled, but it also runs on a tether. There are cables above and a trolley that runs along the high cables.  The ferry doesn’t hang from the trolley, the cable is slack, but it is there if needed. There is a taut cable underneath the water that guides the boat.  It’s like a train on tracks, except the tracks are an underwater cable that guides the boat precisely to the ramps on each side of the river.

I’ve been thinking

Some people/cultures perform genital mutilation on young girls, knowing the discomfort that will cause them for the rest of their lives.  We here in the U.S. generally think such a thing is abhorrent. Yet we circumcise our young boys without even thinking about it.  Why would we do that?  Is it medically necessary?  I don’t think so.  Because we’ve always done it that way?  Not so, especially in cultures other than our own in the U.S.  So our son won’t feel different?  It never mattered to me as a kid.  That argument might be overrated.  Because it has religious significance?  How do we feel about that argument in favor of mutilating young girls? The consequences for boys aren’t severe like with girls but still, why cut out and discard parts for no reason?  Why do we modify genitals that will work just fine if left alone? I just don’t get it.
