Jeff and Carol

We hung out with them a lot when we were all at Gulf Waters. Then they moved to Bandera.  That wasn’t so far away so we still hung out with them some. Two years ago they moved to Salem, and we haven’t seen them since.  Until yesterday.  We went to their house for dinner. The house is nice and normal. Truck and travel-trailer in the driveway. But the yard; the yard is anything but normal. …a little bit of yard-art, and a whole lot of plants.       Cameron was just put the finishing touches on the mural. A little deck in the back with a wading pool for the granddaughter Francis.    I suppose that garden is always in bloom.          For dinner, a nice fajita spread.  Under Francis’ watchful eye, Myet prepared the custom decorated, strawberry, lemonade, seltzer special drinks. With umbrellas! Amanda, who works at a research facility, brought a few flats of just-picked organic blackberries and blueberries.  I think Robin and Judy didn’t move from the kitchen counter for about an hour. It’s all Eddie’s house and yard.

We’ll be here for a while

The part we need has been located; that’s not a problem.  The repair shop can’t get the engine completely fixed before the long 4th of July weekend though.  That would put us out of the coach for days.  No point in starting work now and putting us in a hotel for all that time.  Instead, we’ll stay in the nice RV Park we’re in and wait until Monday to start on the engine.  They should be able to fix it in a day or two, so we shouldn’t have to hotel it for very long. As we are wont to say, plans change.  We’ll figure out another time to visit with Rick and Sherrie at their place north of Bend.  To make up for missing our camping trip with Jeff and Carol at La Pine State Park, we just spent the afternoon and evening with them at their house in Salem.  Next after that is a visit to our coach’s ancestral home in Bend to take care of that mystery rattle/clunk we’ve been puzzling over for the last couple years.  They built the coach, they should be able to find the rattle/clunk.  The Bend shop is still on the calendar… so far. Plans change and so do we. Happy July everyone.

Update

Got a repair guy first thing this morning.  It seemed to be an injector sensor.  Replaced that.  It wasn’t. Now it’s more likely the injector pump.  We’ll try that.  Oops.  Problem.  There aren’t any available.  Exploring options.  Waiting to hear back.  Maybe tomorrow.  In the meantime, it was exciting to see several kinds of loons while we were on the coast. Common Loon. Pacific Loon. and Red-throated Loon.

We left the coast

…and headed inland, following the Columbia River through the Coastal Range.  We crossed over into Washington at Longview, picked up Interstate 5 and cruised south on good road back into Oregon.  After all those slow scenic winding roads, it felt good to drive on interstate for a while.  An easy 65mph.  South of Portland however, the engine sputtered.  It got worse over the next few miles and we coasted in to Salem.  Several stalls and reluctant restarts later, we luckily limped our way into an RV Park here. 2015 summer trip map  It’s a nice park; a safe comfortable place to be while we figure out what to do next.  We have a diesel repair guy scheduled to stop by our rig tomorrow and read the error codes.  That’s what a modern diesel engine does, it records codes for any problem it has.  In fact, most of the time when an engine doesn’t want to run, it’s not that it can’t run, it’s that sensors tell the computer that there is a problem (thus an error code), and the computer decides it wouldn’t be a good idea for the engine to continue to run with a problem like that, so it shuts itself down.  Oftentimes, in fact more often than not, it turns out that there really isn’t an engine problem at all, but a sensor has failed, sending a false message to the computer, causing it to shut itself down for a problem that doesn’t exist. So here we are; inland, and it’s warm; 89 degrees.  We’ve been on the coast, on the south side of seventy degrees for the last month though, so this warm weather feels really good so far. We have plans to visit friends tomorrow farther inland, across the Cascades, near Bend.  This is life on the road, though.  Sometimes plans change.  We’ll see what tomorrow brings.
