We sleep with the blinds closed

…but in the morning, slivers of light slip through.  All winter long, when we wake up in the morning, we can judge the time by the angle of these rays along the north wall of the bedroom.  Except this morning.  We awoke to a blank slate.  The wall was empty.  The morning light was gone. I looked the other way.  We haven’t reached the vernal equinox yet, but the morning sun has reached our south wall.

ISIS

We get headlines and videos with beheadings.  ISIS overrunning villages; consolidating their evil empire.  Bloodthirsty mindless killers.  We have to change the channel every time a report comes on because they are so graphic. Yet “Lone Wolves” are inspired to acts of terror in western countries in the name of ISIS.  Law enforcement agencies all over the world are engaged in preventing young people from traveling to the middle-east to join up with ISIS. WTF?  I feel a disconnect.  The picture we see is pure evil, yet some young people are drawn to it, volunteering to join ISIS; people that aren’t being conquered and absorbed, but people going to great lengths, at great risk, to join on purpose.  Where does that come from?  Can we dismiss anyone who doesn’t agree with our understanding as delusional?  If we do that, what part of the picture are we missing?

Judy the beast

Knee surgery on Thursday.  The wrapping came off Sunday morning.  By Sunday lunch she was practicing on the stairs.  Sunday evening she forgot she had had knee surgery, got up out of the chair and was surprised. She started physical therapy today.  She is way ahead of schedule.  We walked a mile together at Anzalduas Park.  She’s practicing walking without a limp. She’s a beast.

Billboard

Remember the post I sent out in 2010 about the billboard by the beach?  Here is a reprint: I love this billboard near our home; a constant reminder that not everything is as permanent here as we might otherwise think. We live on a barrier island.  Our island paradise intercepts and diffuses hurricanes from the gulf before they get to the mainland.  There is nothing naturally occurring here that is over ten or fifteen feet above sea level.  The weather takes what we build and makes it impermanent.  We build here and live here, recognizing that we’re not really in charge; we’re just using the space for a while.  I reported on it again in 2012: My favorite beach billboard.Still.  Now in 2015.  The decay continues. But it’s still there.
