Wednesday
There are two ways we describe Brazos Bend State Park. When we’re arriving, we call it beautiful. When we’re leaving, it’s painfully beautiful. Another rainy day driving. Rained hard all the way through Houston. Uneventful though. Drove all the way out of Texas; at mile marker 880! Crossed into Louisiana. Lots of water. Lots of bridges. Stopped for the night at Sam Houston Jones State Park.
The weather cleared up long enough for us to have a walk around the park.
See the grass underneath the cypress trees? You wouldn’t want to try walking on it. It’s water with moss on the top and grass growing out of the moss.
Bald eagle this morning. Fireflies tonight.

We’ve gone north. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201563872774147443355.0004e02f0c80f1461c0bf&msa=0&ll=37.439974,-81.430664&spn=23.476512,53.569336 Stopped for the night at Brazos Bend State Park, almost all the way to Houston.
We found a camp site that wasn’t too crowded.
A stormy day traveling. Intermittent rain showers all day. Same here at the park. The water lilies are liking it though.
This could be our favorite state park, but no time to linger this trip. Got to move on. Tomorrow, Louisiana.

A sunny summer Sunday. People out fishing and enjoying the day. The jetty starts off as a nice smooth walk
…but it gets a little jumbled in places.
Then back to smooth
And so forth.
The footing can be a little tricky from time to time, but it’s a calm day, so at least the rocks are dry.
I appreciate the different approaches to fishing.
The end of the jetty is ¾ of a mile out and a rewarding destination.
The view back from the end
A few photographs of laughing gulls
Least tern
Black tern
Sandwich tern
Royal tern
Brown pelican
And a snowy egret
A dolphin swimby
A sea turtle.
And it’s time for the walk back in.

And it’s time for the walk back in. The day of the wood stork
Wood storks are summer birds here. We hadn’t seen one yet this year and if we don’t see one before we go north we might entirely miss them for the year. So Saturday’s mission was to find some wood storks. We found some in a pond in the Sandia area.
There were some black-bellied whistling ducks standing around in the trees as well.
We got more at Tule Lake and scored big time at Waterbird Lake.
Egrets, stilts, and spoonbills too.
