North to Alaska! June, 4,

Now we’re traveling in earnest.  They’ve got big long roads in Wyoming too.  Overall, the highway in Wyoming has been good.  We even noticed some old busted concrete freeway being replaced with nice smooth asphalt.  Driving Texas highways, we see the signs about hurricane evacuation routes.  Driving Wyoming, we see signs about “road closed when flashing” to turn traffic around during blizzards.

It has been a good pronghorn day.  All day long we could pick them out on the hillsides.

More Eastern Wyoming windshield view.

We’re celebrating an anniversary of sorts.  One year-ago today, I was wheeled-in pre-dawn for open heart surgery.  Today, we’re frolicking down the highway on our way to Alaska!  How amazing is that?  We are very thankful that this could be.

Now we’re at Mikesell-Potts Recreation Area County Park at Lake DeSmet.  Dry camping; no hookups. src=157616970409.17356.10535000612059502165@Feluria.aswdev.localF2C00” style=”width:5.775in;height:3.8416in” width=”554″/>

I think we did okay finding our spot.

The Great Alaska Trip map

Sunset tonight 8:47.  Last light 9:22.  2,671 miles to Fairbanks.

4,219, 500, 56, 138 update June, 2,

Now it’s June, and we’re still at 3,037 miles to Fairbanks (but not for much longer).

166 birds remaining to get to 500 for the year.  At the rate of one new bird a day, that’s a 48 bird cushion.  Or, we could continue at one a day and take the last six weeks of the year off.  Or, we could log three quarters of a bird per day and finish at our target.

24 continuing education hours to go.

And 115 counties in which to report a bird to have all 254 counties in Texas!

An all-day family gathering at Becky and Brian’s today.

This is crazy May, 31,

Walking in scenic places, we run into people taking pictures of each other and offer to take a photo of both, or all, of them at once.  Like this couple.

That often triggers a conversation and we have a good visit.  Sometimes it ends up with another picture with Henry included.  We exchange email addresses.  We exchange pictures.

And sometimes, it just ends up being a party!
