Rusty’s RV Ranch

Our morning desert view. Chricahua Mountains in the background. This is an interesting place, Rusty’s RV Ranch.  It’s a Dark Place.  No security lights.  Rules that ask us not to use any outdoor lights; keep windows covered at night so as not to let any direct light out. A considerate place for astronomers. In fact, look in our neighbor’s yard. That’s some amateur telescope.   We did go off on an Arizona Woodpecker quest today.  Saw a lot of birds.  Got blue-throated hummingbird, acorn woodpecker, ladder-backed woodpecker, Mexican jay, bridled titmouse, white-breasted nuthatch, bewick’s wren, western bluebird, hermit thrush, cedar waxwing, painted redstart, green-tailed towhee, spotted towhee, lincoln’s sparrow, brewer’s sparrow, black-throated sparrow, dark-eyed junco, yellow-eyed junco.  No Arizona Woodpecker. Contented ourselves with *many* acorn woodpeckers.   Guess we’ll just have to come back another time…

We made a decision

We woke to a glorious sunny calm cold morning in Las Cruces.  We decided to drive.  We turned right and drove west across the bottom of New Mexico.  It was the warmest direction. We’re at Rusty’s RV Ranch, still in New Mexico, …but right next to the Arizona border. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=205131835882428706345.0004eac8c9eefa867949b&msa=0&ll=36.421282,-102.392578&spn=13.070765,26.784668 We’re about 10 miles from Cave Creek Canyon in Arizona.  That will be worth a look.  There might be an Arizona Woodpecker there…

Wednesday

A short drive downhill from Santa Fe to Albuquerque for a lunch with Shannon.  Shannon is doing most of the New Mexico jobs for Taylor, Roth now.  We don’t see much of her in Denver because she lives in Albuquerque.  Nice chance for a catch-up visit.  Drove on to Las Cruces afterwards. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=205131835882428706345.0004eac8c9eefa867949b&msa=0&ll=36.421282,-102.392578&spn=13.070765,26.784668 We’re staying ahead of the storm.  Tonight’s low here in Las Cruces, 45 degrees.  Tonight’s low in Denver, 5 below.  We’ll take the 50 degree difference!  It’s getting progressively colder in Denver, and everywhere else we’ve stopped for the night on our way south.  The weather is following us. When you move with a weather system, you can end up with the same weather for days as you stay in the same part of the storm.  In our case, we’re staying in the wind line along the front, ahead of the cold.  We’ve been driving in high winds for two days straight.  But we’ve made it to Interstate 10.  We’re through running south.  We’re going to hunker down here for a day or two and take whatever the weather brings.  Whatever that is, it won’t likely be as brutal as what Colorado is getting.  When it *is* time to leave, we’ll either turn left or turn right, east or west.  Haven’t decided yet.  When the slides are out, there is lots of room in our house for stuff.  When we close the slides to travel, not so much.  We pile stuff on the bed.  As we were setting up tonight I looked down the hall and saw a little face watching. Henry looked pretty comfortable there, amongst the junk. So did Annie.

Santa Fe Skies

Santa Fe, New Mexico The place with the neat old equipment scattered about… …and the spectacular sunsets!     Our southerly retreat from the cold is working.  Tonight’s low here, 31.  Tonight’s low in Denver, 11… …and it’s snowing!  We’re still ahead of the Arctic Express, but we’d better keep moving.
