Goodland, Kansas

At the KOA on Interstate 70.  We’re on our way back to the Denver area to finish up our appointments before we head south.  We didn’t need to stop this early in the day, but it’s a good layup.  We’re set for an easy drive back to Longmont tomorrow. We were out in the boonies in a dark place last night, so we went outside to watch the Orionid meteor shower.  It was pretty much like every other meteor shower we’ve stayed up for.  I left after an hour and went back inside without seeing any.  Judy stayed out a little longer and ended up seeing two falling stars. The motorhome is tight inside when it’s all closed up to drive.  We can get at everything we need, but it’s certainly not roomy. But then, when we get to our stop for the day, we push a few buttons and it opens up into real rooms again.  It still amazes me every time.

Thursday

Another high wind day on the Great Plains. http://hint.fm/wind/ Drove north into a headwind anyway.  We were ready to leave Beaver Dunes.  Yesterday the crosswind was so strong it billowed out the port side slide awning and we had to drive with it flapping for a while.  We tried pulling off on the shoulder and opening the slide into the wind and closing it again.  That didn’t help.  When we got to a small town we made two right turns to point us back to the west, stopped, opened and closed the slide on the lee side of the coach, and that reset the slide awning.  The same thing happened to the awning today when we turned across the wind. Stopped for the night at Scott State Park in Kansas. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201563872774147443355.0004cc33898d471fe8fc9&msa=0&ll=38.539573,-100.524902&spn=5.533275,13.392334 The wind is still blowing but it’s supposed to let up tonight.  We’re right on a lake.  It’s probably nice here.

Wednesday

Big wind last night.  We closed a bedroom slide around midnight to cut down on the noise.  Moved on this morning.  Drove east. Calm and quiet through eastern Colorado.  Got VERY windy from the north in Kansas.  Turned south at Garden City to drive with a tailwind and stopped at Beaver Dunes State Park in Oklahoma.https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201563872774147443355.0004cc33898d471fe8fc9&msa=0&ll=38.539573,-100.524902&spn=5.533275,13.392334 A paradise for off-road vehicles in the dunes.  (There aren’t any here now in shoulder season.  It’s all quiet.)  Not much of a campground but we fit (just). The dunes are nice,  ..but it’s a bit of a challenge to walk the sandy 4-wheeler trails. Not very birdy.  Interesting to see once.  We’ll move on in the morning.
